Event Report of 40th Annual Conference of IASC

Theme: Recent Advances In Preventive Conservation of Musuem Collection


The 40TH National Conference on the theme “Recent Advances and Preventive Conservation of Museum Collections”. Organized by the Department of Museology held at AMU in collaboration with Indian Association for the Study of Conservation of Cultural Property, New Delhi, National Museum, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India. In Conference Hall Administrative Block, AMU Aligarh from 5th-7th February 2008.

Inaugural: Session 1st
The inaugural function on 5th Feb, began with the welcome note by Prof. Absar Mustafa Khan, Dean Faculty of Life Sciences, AMU who welcomed and introduced the delegates about the different department and courses run by the University, the history of the Museology Department of the University and inspired the young scientists for hard work.
Prof. M. V. Nair, President IASC in his introductory remark emphasized on the significance of Preservation and Conservation and distinguished between the right and wrong conservational strategies and also to make certain policies for conservationist.
Prof. S. Asif A. Naqvi, Chairman Dept. of Museology explained the relationship between Conservation and Museology, Especially on the human relationship, with objects and memory. He also said that the focus has shifted to Eco-Museology, discussed the global issue in climate change and their impact on diversity of nature sculpture.
Mr. S. P. Singh director (conservation) national museum of India outlined in preventive conservation, and the prime areas of the concern.
Janab Shahid Mehdi, Ex. Vice chancellor Jamia Millia Islamia and Vice President ICCR “International Council for Cultural Relation”. He also explained the need for public private participation in conservation effect, glamorizing the subject by using the media to sensitize the society for the significance of cultural heritage. He ended up saying the there is need of cultural extension to achieve these goals.
Prof. Badre Alam, Vice Chancellor, AMU Aligarh said that memories of past reflected in museums and helps the society to understand the present and improve the future.

Prof. O.P. Aggarwal, in his key note address enumerated in detail the latest method and techniques in preservation and conservation.
The session ended with the discussion of prof. S. M. Hadi, Chairman Dept. of Biochemistry AMU, briefly discussed Biodeterioration of museum collection. He emphasized on humidity, as a major problem because it promote bacterial growth.

Session 2nd:
Next session was chaired by Dr. M. V. Nair, Director NRLC, followed by a presentation on the theme “Why Preventive Conservation” by A. s. bisht.
Mr. Vikas Revappa Usture, NMI, Delhi, described “Preventive Conservation Practices of Some Museum of New Delhi”.
The session came to an end with brief presentation by Manjunathachari R. C. and Shirish Rajmalawar, RCL, Mysore on “Use of Indian Traditional Material in Preservation of Art Objects”.
The day ended with visit to Sir Syed Academy, AMU Aligarh and Ibn-Sena Academy, Dodhpur Aligarh.

Session 3rd:
The first session on 6th Feb 2008, in the conference hall, Administrative block AMU Aligarh, was chaired by Dr. V. Jeyaraj.
The discussion started with Prof. S. Asif A. Naqvi who briefly discussed the concept of “Eco-Museums and its significance in preventive conservation of Tangible and Intangible Heritage, both natural and cultural”.
Miss Subhra Devi, Ph.D, NMI, New Delhi, discussed about “Traditional Preventive Conservation, Practices of Assam, with special reference to Sanchipat Manuscript. Miss. Kalpana form RCL Mysore presented her paper on the topic Permanence of Cellulose Acetate Lamination, By Using Alkaline Tissue Paper.
Miss. Mehnaaz Azadi Boyaghchi, Ph.D in Conservation, NMI, New Delhi presented paper on the “Importance of Using the Extract of Hanzal as an Insecticide”.

The session ended with the presentation by Mr. Gaurav on “Recent Advances In Preventive Conservation of Museum Collection, Electronic Safeguarding: Use of Microwave”.

Session 4th:
The second session chaired by Dr. B.V.Kharbade, began with a detailed PowerPoint presentation by Mr. Hari Kumar on “Disaster Management of Museum Collection, Especially earthquake”.
Engineer Yadraam from Ceramic Institute Khurja presented his paper on “History of Glass Beads” and briefly discussed the various techniques involved in it.
The session ended with the presentation on “Preventive Conservation for the Control of Biodeterioration of Manuscript” by Mr. Abdurrahim K. and Ms. Sheeba Khan.
Session 5th:
The last technical session chaired by Prof. Dr. I. K. Bhatnagar, began with the discussion on “Restoration of Japanese Style Painted on Silk” by Mr. D. K. Verma and Ranjan Chakroborty.
Dr. V. jeyaraj, govt museum Chennai spoke on “Preventive conservation in museums”.
Mr. Anand kumar presented his paper on conservation of oil painting a case study.
Miss. Parvinder Kaur NRLC presented her paper on “Use of Adhesives in Paper Conservation Experimental Findings”.
The last presentation was by Mr. A. K. Bahadur on “Chemical Conservation on Sculptures and Inscriptions in Sri Sikhagirisware”.

Valedictory note:
The day ended with the valedictory function and distribution of participatory certificates by the Vice Chancel
